''Save the Asgard II''

Afloat have opened an online petition to provide a meaningful voice for everyone who wants to save the ship and Irish sail training before it's too late!

http://www.afloat.ie/news/raise-the-asgard-sign-the-petition-here/

"Over 10,000 have learned the ropes on her deck, many of them from across the religious divide on our island. She flew the tricolour in hundreds of ports around the world, providing positive and cost effective international exposure for this nation. And she served as a tangible link to our recent and turbulent past. On an island nation that so often turns its back on the sea, Asgard II – built by Irish hands, inspired by Irish history, recognised around the globe – came to symbolise all that was possible for our maritime industry. Recognising the unique role played by this brigantine, we, the undersigned, call on the Irish government to move immediately to salvage her and begin work on her restoration. We also call on the Irish government to commit to the future of the sail training programme, in the event that Asgard II cannot now be salvaged, by setting out a timetable for the commissioning of a replacement vessel".

West of Ireland Offshore Racing Association

Dubarry West Coast Super League 2008

“Three years of success“

For the third year running the Dubarry West Coast Super League 2008 was a reendowing success with over seventy boats taking part from Foynes Yacht Club, Western Yacht Club, Sligo Yacht Club, Mayo Sailing Club, Clifden Boat Club, Galway Bay Sailing Club, Howth Yacht Club and Tralee Bay Sailing Club at various events along the west coast seaboard.
The Dubarry West Coast Super League is an extracted series of four events to count from seven events on the west coast, which nicely dovetailed together and is organised by the West of Ireland Offshore Racing Association in association with the host clubs.

The seven events where the Estuary Bell ~ Foynes Yacht Club, Tralee Bay Sailing Club Regatta, Northwest Racing Association annual meet which was a combined event with the West Coast Championships, O’ Sullivan Marine 100 mile race,  Galway Bay Sailing Club cruiser regatta and the Shannon Ferry October Series at the Royal Western Yacht Club of Ireland.
The objectives of the super league are straight forward, to promote sailing, to encourage inter-club competition, to avoid clashing of events and to cater for boats that wish to travel.

At each of the events the fleet are split into classes and then they race on a duel handicap systems, IRC Rating and progressive Echo handicap systems.

Class One, Andrew Bracken’s J35 ‘Joyrider’ from Foynes Yacht Club took the laurels in both IRC and Echo with Liam Burke’s Corby 33 ‘AWOL’ from Galway Bay Sailing Club finishing a very close second in IRC and Echo and Martin Breen’s Corby 33 ‘That’s Life‘ again from Galway Bay Sailing Club finishing third in IRC and Echo.

Class Two the crew of ‘Marissa IX’ with Rob Allen Skippering the Humphrey's 3/4 tonner from the Royal Western Yacht Club of Ireland dominated their class and won in both IRC and Echo with David Buckley’s Sigma 33 ‘Boojum’ from Tralee Bay Sailing Club finishing a very creditable second in both IRC and Echo, Finbar O'Connell’s Sigma 33 ‘Treyona’ from the same club finished third in IRC with John & Edward Conway’s GK 34 ‘Golden Kopper’ finishing third in class two Echo.

Class Three the boat that set the pace was Jackie Ward’s Parker 27 ‘Hallmark’ from Clifden Boat Club finishing in the podium position in both IRC and Echo; Donal McCormack’s Shamrock ‘Battle’ from Foynes Yacht Club in second in both IRC and Echo and Mark Prendiville’s HB31 ‘Rooster’ From Tralee Bay Sailing Club finishing third on IRC and Raphael Crowley’s Sadler 29 ‘Bunbury’ finishing third on Echo.

OVERALL RESULTS OF THE DUBARRY WEST COAST SUPERLEAGUE 2008

First overall on IRC was Jackie Ward’s Parker 27 ‘Hallmark’ from Clifden Boat Club

First overall on Echo was Andrew Bracken’s J35 ‘Joyrider’ from Foynes Yacht Club

Second overall on IRC was Rob Allen’s Humphrey's 3/4 tonner ‘Marissa IX’ from the Royal Western Yacht Club of Ireland

Second overall on Echo was Rob Allen’s Humphrey's 3/4 tonner ‘Marissa IX’ from the Royal Western Yacht Club of Ireland

Third overall on IRC was Donal McCormack’s Shamrock ‘Battle’ from Foynes Yacht Club

Third overall on Echo was Jackie Ward’s Parker 27 ‘Hallmark’ from Clifden Boat Club .

A very innovated league bringing together the club’s the length of the West Coast. The sailors that travel to these events will raise the standard of racing and become leaders in their divisions. It is fantastic to see all the clubs on the west pulling together and it is a credit to the West of Ireland Offshore Racing Association for organising the West Coast Super League” – Denis Kiely, Secretary, Irish Cruiser Racing Association.

On behalf of the association I would like to thank Michael Walsh and Dubarry Ireland who have being very generous to the association over the last three years sponsoring the West Coast Super League”. - Simon Mc Gibney, Commodore, West of Ireland Offshore Racing Association.

Without the host clubs the length of the West Coast, hosting these events the West Coat Super League would not be able to continue and grow, our thanks to the clubs.

Finally, thanks has to go to all the owners, skippers, crew, members that have taken part over the last three years that makes the West Coast Super League a great success.

Looking forward to the West Coast Super League 2009 the six events are: Cruiser Regatta 30th & 31st May Foynes Yacht Club

Clifden Tops the West Coast

Clifden Boat Club wins two out of three classes and the Overall Title in The “Dubarry West Coast Super League” 2007

Overall Winner: Jackie Ward's yacht, “Hallmark”, Clifden Boat Club.

Class 1 IRC Winner: Thomas & Kieran Whelan's X332 “Chaos”, Royal Western Yacht Club.
Class 2 IRC Winner: Dave Griffin's Dehler 34 “Egalite”, Clifden Boat Club.
Class 3 IRC Winner: Jackie Ward's Parker 27 “Hallmark”, Clifden Boat Club.

Class 1 ECHO Winner: Thomas & Kieran Whelan's X332 “Chaos”, Royal Western Yacht Club.
Class 2 ECHO Winner: John & Edward Conway's GK34 “Golden Kopper”, Foynes Yacht Club.
Class 3 ECHO Winner: Donal McCormack's Shamrock “ Battle ”, Foynes Yacht Club.

The second “Dubarry West Coast Super League” was another success with over ninety boats taking part from Sligo Yacht Club, Mayo Sailing Club, Clifden Boat Club, Galway Bay Sailing Club, Foynes Yacht Club, Royal Western Yacht Club, Tralee Bay Sailing Club and Howth Yacht Club.
The Dubarry West Coast Super League is an extracted series of three events to count from six events on the west coast, which nicely dovetailed together and is organised by the West of Ireland Offshore Racing Association.
The six events were the Northwest Offshore Racing Association annual meet (this year in Sligo), the West Coast Championship's 2007 (Clifden), O' Sullivan Marine 100 mile race, Galway Bay Sailing Club cruiser regatta, Foynes Regatta and the October Series at the Royal Western Yacht Club.

The objectives of the Super League are straight forward, to promote sailing, to encourage inter-club competition, to avoid clashing of events and to cater for boats that wish to travel.

The Overall Results of the “Dubarry West Coast Super League” 2007

1 st Overall: “Hallmark”, Clifden Boat Club
2 nd Overall: “Chaos”, Royal Western Yacht Club
3 rd Overall: “ Battle ”, Foynes Yacht Club

Jackie Ward, and his team, from Clifden on yacht “Hallmark” won Class 3 IRC + ECHO in the Super league 2006. They got 3 rd Overall in the Super League 2006, only beaten by “Disaray” (winner 2006) and “Chaos” (2 nd in 2006). This year they went all out and won the overall title in 2007. But it wasn't easy.

Team “Hallmark” 2007: Jackie Ward, Damian Ward, Barry Ward, Thomas Davis, Mike Coquil, Mathieu Hussenot, Ian Shanahan and Kenny Flaherty.
The 2007 Super League started with the “Foynes Regatta” (19 th &20 th May) , where there weren't enough yachts for a class 3 ... so “Hallmark”, and “Battle”, had to race in Class 2, directly (on-the-water) against the 2006 overall winner “Disaray”. Three races were held over the weekend. “Hallmark” won Class 2, but the competition was hot between these three yachts. This was the first time, in 2007, these top yachts went at it ... but not the last (wait for October). An encouraging, start to the season. “Chaos” won Class 1.

Foynes Results

IRC 1: Chaos, Dexterity, Marissa IX. ECHO 1: Chaos, Marissa IX, Dexterity.

IRC 2: Hallmark, Disaray, Battle . ECHO 2: Battle , Golden Kopper, Hallmark.

Second event was the “O'Sullivan Marine 100 Mile Race” (15 th June) . This race was from Fenit, Tralee Bay , to Baltimore , to help get interested yachts to two south coast events. “Chaos” won this race. This was the only race “Hallmark” did not enter.

The third event was the WIORA “West Coast Championships” (4 th -7 th July), hosted by Clifden.
This was the largest event on the west coast in 2007 with good competition in each class. The first two days racing were cancelled due to gales. Five races followed over the next two days. The “West Coast Champion” title went to an east coast, Class 3, yacht “ Alliance ”. This was the only west coast event they did, so they don't feature in the Superleague. This was also the only Class 3 yacht to beat “Hallmark” in Clifden.
Clifden Results

IRC 1: Inis More, Roxanne, Chaos. ECHO 1: That's Life, AWOL, Marissa IX.
IRC 2: Quelle Surprise, Treyona, Crozz. ECHO 2: Treyona, Golden Kopper, Uforia.
IRC 3: Alliance , Hallmark, Battle . ECHO 3: Siamsa, Hallmark, Battle .

White Sails: Running Tide, Misty, Suaimhneas

Fourth event was “ Sligo Regatta” (NORA Event) (20 th -22 nd July), where once again there weren't enough yachts for a Class 3. “Hallmark” raced in Class 2 again, against the usual suspects and some new ones, only beaten by a north coast yacht, “Chilli Padi”. This was the only west coast event they did, so they don't feature in the Superleague.

Sligo Results

IRC 1: Esperanto, That's Life, Xena. ECHO 1: Esperanto, That's Life, X-Div.
