W.I.O.R.A. standing for West of Ireland Offshore Racing Association was founded in 1976 and has the stated goal of promoting and supporting sailing, particularly racing on the west coast of Ireland.

W.I.O.R.A., as a body, organises an annual race meeting, hosted each year by one of the west coast clubs, during which boats race in different classes for a series of sponsored prizes.

In 2019 Foynes Yacht Club hosted the annual W.I.O.R.A event, most successfully, especially given the challenging conditions and in 2020, my own club, Tralee Bay Sailing Club will host the event.

W.I.O.R.A brings together sailors from different parts of the country annually not just to race but to socialize and exchange views and experiences together for the four days of racing before scattering back to their home ports. Meeting up with old friends and adversaries and establishing new friendships is an integral part of W.I.O.R.A’s ethos.

For an organisation to prosper it needs new members and it needs boat owners to make a commitment. To those of you who have over the years supported the event, on behalf of W.I.O.R.A, I would like to thank you and hope that you will continue your support. If you have a boat and have ever thought of trying racing, be it White sails or Spinnaker racing, I urge you to give it a try. Tralee bay is a beautiful sailing ground and entries for the 2020 event will be available through the club website from March 2020 onwards.

I look forward to meeting with many of you over the coming months either socially or out on the water,

Sail safely,

Gary Fort
